日本政府観光局は2018年のインバウンド（訪日外国人）客数の年間推計値を発表しました。2018年12月18日に初の3000万人を突破。2018年のインバウンド客数の推計は前年比8.7％増となる約3119万2000人となりました。
2018年は夏場を中心に自然災害が相次ぎ、東アジア市場を中心に落ち込みが見られたものの、これらの市場でも12月までに前年比増へと回復。市場別調査では香港が前年比1.1％減（2018年の訪問者数は220万7900人）となった以外は、19市場で前年を上まわる結果となりました。
伸びが顕著な市場として、タイは航空路線の新規就航や増便が相次いだことで前年比14.7％増となる113万2100人が訪問し、東南アジア市場で初めて100万人を突破。同じく航空路線の新規就航や増便により、フィリピンが前年比18.8％増の50万4000人と、初めて50万人の大台を突破しました。
東南アジアでは、ベトナムの現地旅行会社に向けた取り組みを強化したことが奏功し、同国からのインバウンドは38万9100人、前年比26％増と高い伸び率となっている。
欧米豪市場は、極東地域との路線開設や増便が実現したほか、ビザ発給要件が緩和されたロシアが22.7％増の9万4800人へと伸長。経由便の座席供給量増に加えて、旅行先としての日本の認知度が高まったイタリアからのインバウンドが19.2％増の15万人と好調でした。
2020年には訪日外国人旅客数の目標を、4000万人としています。

The increase of foreigners coming to Japan is unstoppable. The number may have lowered to 6,220,000 back in 2011 when eastern Japan encountered massive earthquake, but has immediately regained at 2013 exceeding to 10 million. By 2014, the number has even increased to 29.4% or 13,410,000. The number has doubled since 2011.
Come 2015, the numbers have shown unexpected vigorous growth. From January to June, there was a total of 9,140,000 tourists (an increase of 2,880,000 compared to the same period of last year) or 46% of incredible growth. Based on the ratings of JTB, a leading travel agency, they are forecasting that tourists will reach 15,000,000 by this year. If this will continue, a further increase to 19,000,000 is not impossible.
